The Jones football team won 20-8 Tuesday evening against Farragut, in a dominant showing on their home turf for the first time in their inaugural season. 

Senior running back Patrick Amazube kicked things off with a 40-yard touchdown in the 1st quarter, followed by senior Jaylen Trice rushing for a 10-yard touchdown in the 2nd. The two teams traded blows until senior Shawn Slaughter had the go-ahead touchdown run midway through the 4th.

In a season full of firsts, this was the team’s second win, beating Perspectives last week.

Senior Gabriel Kleinman, the team’s student assistant coach, has been at the helm of the offense as of late, constantly communicating with the other coaches on the intercom.

“The team has improved tremendously since week one,” Kleinman said. “The biggest thing with the players is for them to understand that it’s not sunshine and rainbows. There are going to be a lot of ups, and especially a lot of downs.”

Despite poor weather conditions, the Eagles kept their turnovers and mistakes at a minimum, sticking to their brand of football.

“I think the momentum from this win will carry over,” Kleinman said. “All the players are happy to be stacking wins, and looking forward to winning even more.”

The excitement wasn’t limited to the coaching staff. Junior wide receiver Elijah Milsap, who went for 120 receiving yards on the night, felt the weight of the moment. 

“Heading into the game, I was really excited, especially since it was the first home game,” Milsap said. “I felt it was important that we came out with a win in front of our home crowd.”

With the win, the Eagles moved to 2-2 on the season, looking to continue their inaugural success with five games left, including next Tuesday against Mather.

“Five more wins,” Kleinman said.
