This year, each major Chicago sports team had specific expectations heading into their respective seasons, with new rosters and a new found identity throughout the teams.
After multiple losing seasons for each team, there seems to be a new spark in Chicago sports.
Coming into the new season, the city of Chicago did not expect much and had their doubts for each team as they embark on a new season. Shockingly, the Bulls, Blackhawks, Bears all have a winning record.
In the sports world, many believed that Chicago sports had lost the ability to win because of constantly losing in each of the three major sports, starting with the Bulls.
After trading away key players like stars Zach Lavine, DeMar DeRozan, Alex Caruso and Lonzo Ball, many believed the Bulls were heading into another rebuild and this was going to be a year where they would try and get another high draft pick. Instead, they have shocked a lot of people with their hot start, as they are 5-1 and second in the Eastern Conference.
Since the Blackhawks championships in the early 2010s, they haven’t gotten back to that success, causing a rebuild and they have a winning record and are fifth in the western conference in the NHL with Connor Bedard, the team’s superstar, currently has 25 points in 16 games and is tied for second most points in the entire NHL, and he’s only 20 years old.
The Bears, after a disappointing season filled with drama, coaches getting fired in the middle of the season and embarrassing losses, have finally changed the culture of their franchise around as they are third in the NFC North division, one of the hardest divisions in the NFL, with a 5-3 record.
The fans in Chicago have been waiting for that winning culture to return to the city. But as time continued to pass fans started to lose hope in Chicago.
“I thought we were going to improve after seeing how our young talent ended off last season and now seeing them performing well makes me excited for the future. We still have top prospects in the minor leagues coming up, along with our third overall pick [Anton Frondell] in Sweden right now,” said Dillon Barnes ‘26.
When asked about his expectations on the Blackhawks before the season, after a good end to last season the city of Chicago was starting to feel a shift in the culture.
After back to back seasons of just being stuck in the middle, Bulls fans expectations at the start of this season weren’t very high as they didn’t think this team was capable of winning many games.
“Man, they were not bright. The team, in my opinion, was looking pretty bleak. I wasn’t
really liking the direction the team was going, and I was definitely seeing a losing record.
I didn’t really see any hope for the next couple of years,” said Gavin Daniel ‘28
Many fans thought this would be another year where the Bulls would be mediocre, but that thought quickly changed after seeing how well they have been playing to make them
the number 1 seed in the Eastern Conference.
The Bears started to pick up their stride this year with the team having a 5 and 3 record, which is already the same amount of wins they ended with last year after coming in with small expectations.
Fans are surprised after the sudden shift for the team from being in the middle of the pack with the future looking bleak to now, where the stock is rising and the future looks a lot brighter.
The city of Chicago has been waiting for their teams to all get back on track, and this might be the year that the fans of Chicago have been begging for, as for the first time since 2010 all of the teams have a winning record, which gives fans hope that the winning culture has returned to the Windy City.
