Last year, the Bears and Bulls both underwent major rebuilds. Looking ahead to this season, it’s beginning to feel like one is stuck in mediocrity and the other is finally pushing through.
The Bulls whiffed on five key draft picks. In 2020, they selected Patrick Williams with the fourth pick and Marko Simonovic with the forty-fourth pick, but passed on multiple future all-stars like Tyrese Haliburton, Tyrese Maxey, Jaden McDaniels and Desmond Bane.
All of these players have made bigger gains than Patrick Williams in statistics and performance, while the Bulls released Marko Simonovic from the roster on July 6, 2023.
The Bulls had a great start to the 2020–21 NBA season and topped the Eastern Conference, but injuries to starting point guard Lonzo Ball derailed their momentum. They dropped to the eighth seed and lost in five games to a powerhouse Milwaukee Bucks team.
After the season, many Bulls fans expected Vice President Artūras Karnišovas to build on the recent success. However, the Bulls haven’t returned to the playoffs, and the front office has made little to no impactful roster moves since then.
The Chicago Bulls general manager offers no excuses for the lack of effort. “Well, I’m asking for patience from the fans because we’re in the first year of that transition,” said Karnišovas during a press conference in April. But Bulls fans are tired of waiting and want to see changes now, with the feeling of a meaningless rebuild still looming.
Chicago sports fans are known for being demanding, and Ryan Poles, the new Bears general manager, made it clear in his actions and statements this offseason that, unlike his unpopular predecessors, he plans on bringing success to the program.
After the Bears hired Poles, he had a lot of work to do with the Bears roster and many knew with his recent success with the Kansas City Chiefs – a team who has won back to back Super Bowls -fans felt like there was hope for the future of the Chicago Bears.
Poles said during a Jan. 31, 2022, press conference, “We’re going to take the North and never give it back.” Hearing this fired up Bears fans and also gave them a feeling of hope.
Since Poles was hired as general manager, the Bears haven’t made the playoffs. However, he has been making moves to improve the roster by netting star wide receiver DJ Moore from the Carolina Panthers, a move which led the Bears to getting the number one pick in the NFL draft, while also having the number nine pick in the NFL draft.
These two picks led to quarterback of the future Caleb Williams and star wide receiver Rome Odunze. Poles has made great draft decisions and has had far better offseasons than Karnišovas, with the most recent addition being new head coach Ben Johnson, who is considered one of the greatest offensive minds in the NFL, and fixing up the offensive line by bringing in former Super Bowl champion Joe Thuney and veteran Jonah Jackson.
It’s evident that the Bears’ leadership has a vision– something the Bulls desperately lack. As a result, fans expect another mediocre season from the Bulls, even though neither team has made the playoffs; the Bears set their sights on making the playoffs for the first time since the 2020 season. Meanwhile, the Bulls’ future remains murky, as the fans brace for another mediocre season.
Both fanbases show passion and loyalty, and although their rebuilding paths differ for their views on rebuilding, hope for a championship is still strong for both sports teams.
The fans for both teams just want to have a sense that this year will be different for both teams, no matter the paths; they just want a successful season for both teams.
Whether it be Soldier Field or the United Center, many fans across Chicago are craving for one thing: hope. And right now, the Bears are the only team giving them a reason to believe that things are about to change for Chicago sports.
