The Eagles secured the win against Carver at home on Monday night, winning in two sets as they look to make a deep run in the CPS Playoffs.

An impressive regular season for the Eagles (20-3 overall) and a 7-2 record in the Gold Conference earned them the two seed for the playoffs, while the Challengers came into the game holding the 31st seed.

Jones was able to cakewalk through the first set 25-15, dominating with towering spikes and blocks over the much shorter Carver squad. The second set, however, was much closer, with the Challengers only trailing 18-15 at one point. The Eagles made it out safely down the stretch, securing the 25-18 victory to finish the two set sweep.

The Eagles looked more calm, unified, and in-charge than ever in the dominating win over the Challengers, and most of it is owed to the culture Head Coach Jake Myers has brought to the team.

“Every single day of practice, the goal is to work hard, get better, and have fun. That’s our mantra. That’s the thing that we want to make sure is at the forefront. Not winning, not dominating a team, but everyday we need to take a step forward.”

Myers has gotten his players to buy into this way of playing, and it was on display during Senior Night.

“I think we had a lot of fun out there. Everyone got a lot of reps and it was just great to see everyone put the ball down with a smile on their face,” said Nic Iturralde ‘19.

The night began with a special ceremony to recognize the seniors on their special night. Myers had no shortage of praise for this year’s team, who he claimed to be the best squad he has ever coached.

“I’ve coached in CPS for ten years and Jones for eight,” Myers said after the game. “This is the best record we have had and all of our losses have been close games, so we very well could be undefeated.”

As good as the team is on the court, a large part of what allows the Eagles to make devastating offensive runs against opponents is the electricity that comes off the bench, something that is usually kickstarted by Manager Adrian Gomez ‘19.

“I think most people would agree that I bring a nice energy from the bench. I try to keep the team positive.”

2019 will be Myers’ final season coaching for Jones, but with how the team is looking at the start of the playoffs, there’s a good chance the Eagles will be able to send him out on top with a CPS Championship.

The Eagles defeated Solorio 2-0 in their second round matchup on Wednesday, May 8, and are looking to exact revenge in their quarterfinal on Thursday, May 9 against Payton, who handed them one of their three losses earlier this year.
