Despite early offensive struggles in the girls basketball senior night game, the Jones Eagles took an early 13-2 lead and never looked back, defeating Schurz 58-35.

Strong defense was the key for the team throughout the second quarter, giving them a 28-12 lead at the end of the first half.

Creating turnovers that lead to fastbreak layups allowed the Eagles to surge to a commanding 51-24 lead at the end of the third quarter.

The role players then came in to finish the game, and despite turnovers and rebounding struggles towards the end, The Eagles were easily able to hold on, finishing 58-35 with a commanding victory over Schurz.

“We played well enough to win but it was tough for us to develop an offensive rhythm,” said head coach Nicholas Teich. “We were doing a lot of subbing that we do not normally do and it messed up our rhythm.”

“Defensively I thought we were pretty sound” said Teich. The Eagles created several turnovers themselves leading to points which allowed the team to run up the score.

“We did give up a lot of offensive rebounds” said Teich. “We did not have the best focus because of the circumstance and I think that it what lead to that. We are going to look to improve on rebounding by intensifying our approach”

“The whole game we were not as focused as we could have been”  said co-captain Jessica Katzin ‘19. “We had a lot of turnovers.”

The atmosphere of a senior night game is different than that of a regular game.

“The game had a lighter feel and was overall more positive” said Katzin. “It was an overall fun game.”

“It was nice to be able to get all of the seniors a point as we send them off on their senior night” said Teich.

The Eagles are now 8-6 and have a tournament at Riverside-Brookfield high school on December 26th.
