On November 8, 2024, Chicago rapper Adamn Killa surprised Jones students with a free performance on Harrison outside the school lobby.
“My friend texted me his social media post where he was like, ‘I’m doing a school tour at Jones College Prep, what time do you guys get out?’” said Yair Avalos ‘25.
Avalos viewed this as an opportunity to give his peers a fun performance to end the school week with.
“Me being a curious George, I of course answered him and I said, ‘oh we get out at 2:15,’ because it was an early release day,” said Avalos.
Killa’s mission with his CPS school tour is to inspire young people through his music.
“I was going to schools already to get youth involved,” said Killa.
Many students enjoyed the performance, as they believe the rapper brought together the Jones community, creating a remarkable memory.
“Adamn was giving out pictures, he was playing songs. Everybody was dancing,” said Jacob Hernandez ‘25.
Killa’s motivation to perform for CPS students stems from his own upbringing.
“I went to Kenwood, I’m from Chicago. I’m from Roseland to be exact,” said Killa.
Social media has created a lot of buzz around Adamn and his music. The artist’s strong ambition should take him to big places in the future.
“My goal is to be the biggest independent artist ever,” said Killa.
5 CPS high schools and 2 suburban high schools have hosted an Adamn Killa performance so far.
“I went to Whitney Young, Lincoln Park, Kenwood, Jones, Lane Tech, Evanston Township, and New Trier,” said Killa.
The performance was a welcome change in the typically unspirited student body. Students who attended reported the performance gave Jones an opportunity for school camaraderie.
“This performance was important to Jones because I felt like it really brought us closer together as a community at the end of the school day preparing for the long weekend,” said Avalos.
Of the 8 schools he performed for, Whitney Young gave the highest energy.
“Jones was turnt, Whitney Young was best so far though,” said Killa.
The show left students wanting more, hoping for the rapper’s return to Jones sometime soon.
“Adamn should definitely return. He should come in the summer,” said Quinton Johnson ‘25.
Killa performs at various Chicago venues as well as his CPS high school tour. The artist sought to promote his upcoming concert occurring on November 23, 2024.
“Adamn Killa randomly approached our school and had a performance. I liked it, so I’m thinking about going to see him this week,” said Johnson.
Fans of Killa can attend his show this Saturday at Subterranean in Chicago’s Wicker Park neighborhood.
“I have a show Saturday Nov 23rd at Subterranean, everybody pull up,” said Killa.
