On September 7th, Olivia Dorfman ’26, a singles player for the Jones Girls Varsity Tennis team, beat Walter Payton’s singles player.
Dorfman has acquired many wins throughout the season already, but the win against Payton shocked her the most.
“A lot of practice and hard work was put in before the game, but the win against Payton was a surprise. I was thrilled when I realized I beat the singles player,” said Dorfman.
The team captain, Ruth Gelling ‘23, has complete confidence in Dorfman’s abilities and skills.
“Olivia has the best record of anyone on the team,” said Gelling. “She had the highest chance of getting seeded in cities, and she has played the most competitive position against the most competitive teams and has mostly won.”
From playing as a child to advancing to the varsity team, Dorfman put a lot of effort into moving up in tennis.
“I’ve been playing for countless years, but I started on the Jones team my freshman year,” said Dorfman.
Dorfman not only practices during the school year but also actively participates in conditioning and summer training.
“Olivia put in a ton of summer training and conditioning to prepare for this season,” said Melissa Flisk, varsity tennis coach. “She was out practicing with her coach daily, and her hard work has shown in her matches this year.”
The team congratulates her on every good play and stands with her throughout her tennis journey.
“Through all of Olivia’s wins, we have been there cheering her on,” said Gelling, “congratulating her on her hard work and good playing.”
Although Dorfman put a lot of effort and work into her tennis skills, the victory against Payton came unexpectedly for her.
“The win against Payton was probably Olivia’s greatest achievement this school year,” said Flisk.
Dorfman picked up many skills from the team, with her confidence in her plays showing the most growth.
“Throughout the season, I have seen Olivia’s mental toughness grow,” said Gelling.
Dorfman’s success grows with the team, and she hopes to learn more from her teammates.
“Olivia is a model student-athlete and a cheerleader for her teammates,” said Flisk. “She is invested in their successes on the court and is always willing to give tips or offer compliments when someone is having an off match.”
The team hopes for a successful season with Dorfman and more wins in the future.
“Olivia has impacted the team this season through her constant dedication to the game and the care and support of her peers on the team. I look forward to seeing what she can accomplish over the next two years,” said Flisk.
