A five step guide to protect yourself while in the city


1. Stay Alert

Scan the area as you walk. Stay aware of your surroundings and others around you. Don’t get distracted by your phone or by listening to headphones.

2. Avoid walking alone

Try to walk with a friend whenever possible. If you begin to feel uncomfortable or nervous about a potentially dangerous situation, call a friend or approach a crowded area.

3. Plan ahead

Plan your route. Choose well-lit and busy streets, avoid vacant lots and alleys. Tell someone where you’re going and when you arrive at your destination. 

4. Trust your instincts

Be alert to your surroundings. If you feel uncomfortable, leave or seek help. Avoid unnecessary contact with strangers and consider purchasing a self defense object, such as pepper spray, body alarm or Wi.

5. Hide valuables

Put away your phone, headphones and other valuables. Don’t pile yourself with bags or groceries.
