Trends that we’re saying goodbye to in 2018

Everything from fidget spinners to musical.ly are things to leave behind in 2017

2017 was a year of firsts. There’s no denying it, but sometimes we can get a little carried away in how we do things. Trends come and go, just as fast as they pop up on Twitter. By no means should we stop being innovative, but maybe just chill. Just a little.

  • Fidget Spinners

I’m not even sure where these came from. But by now, we all know what they are. Fidget spinners- the tiny plastic thing-a-ma-jigs that took the world by storm. Everyone was infatuated with them, the elderly, toddlers, and even adults. Maybe their simplicity is what made them so appealing. They can be spun on virtually any surface, and they provide a reliable release from boredom. These toys don’t sound that bad- wrong. They are distracting to the students using them, and their surrounding peers. They make noise, light up, and serve as pure distraction.

Despite popular belief, these contraptions don’t help you focus. These claims of aiding with ADHD have not been proven. If anything, they provide more of a distraction for the user. These toys are so annoying, and they’ve got to go. Their brief stint of popularity was fine, but now it’s simply too much. You know you’ve made it big when there are knock offs of your product. As a matter of fact, I can’t go anywhere without receiving a Fidget Spinner in a gift bag or as a present. For those reasons, Fidget Spinners are not invited back in 2018.

  • Musical.ly

Some of you might be wondering, “What is Musical.ly?” Well, let me tell you. Musical.ly is a Chinese social media app in which users can upload videos and message others. On paper, this app sounds fine. But, oh, how you’ve been mistaken. This app has given a platform to millions of children, yes children, who take to show off their non existent singing and dancing skills.

Musical.ly is not cute. Musical.ly is not fun. I was first introduced to this app through one of my younger cousins. We were sitting at the table one day, when she invited me to look at her iPod. It took all of my strength to hold back my opinions. She was singing, and popping and shaking. To put it nicely, it wasn’t cute.

The most popular videos that are created include those who lip sync and dance over the most popular songs of the time. I don’t want to see your dirty room in the background of your dancing. As a matter of fact, I don’t want to see you dancing at all. Recently, I found out that people are “Musical.ly famous”! Can you believe that. Famous. Off of an app. Honestly, this is one of those apps that will not endure the test of time. Soon, it will have faded into obscurity. Remember Kik? My point exactly.

  • Chokers

This year, the ‘90s were really in. Everything from boyfriend jeans, New Balance, and track suits dominated the fashion scene. Another accessory that took the world by storm was the choker. Chokers were at peak popularity in the 1990s, and somehow found their way back into the mainstream. Their comeback makes sense; chokers pair well with evening wear, day dresses, and everyday average streetwear.

I’ll admit, chokers are hella cute. So cute in fact, that I own about 4 myself. I wear chokers, however, I am not above the criticisms being leveled here. It’s time to say goodbye. People have taken to tying strings, papers, anything they can find around their necks. Despite the fact that chokers are cute, it should be noted that chokers don’t have to be worn with every outfit. Honestly, chokers have had a good run. Despite their strong complements to every outfit, chokers should retire. Never to be seen for at least another good 5 years.

  • Weird YouTube Videos

As long as I can remember, YouTube has had a strong presence in the lives of younger generations. I can remember the days of Weird Al’s “Trapped in the Drive Thru” and Glozell’s “Cinnamon Challenge.” *sighs* Those were the days. Now, we have complete insanity. I think I’ve been saying this a lot but seriously, PEOPLE ARE GETTING CARRIED AWAY! Seriously! Gone are the days of good natured chuckles and genuine laughs. Instead of providing quality entertainment, today’s Youtube is more geared towards profit. Mulah, dolla dolla bill$.

I think that the change in the content of videos has changed, in line with creators realizing that the videos that they produce can be monetized. In a world where views equal money, people will do anything to get you to click. The worst example of this phenomena are the prank videos. Videos in which people mislead their victims, for a good laugh. These videos usually involve some sort of tragedy, or misfortune on the part of the creator. I’m sick and tired of being clickbaited, or fooled/misled in order to click on a video. I’m sick and tired of people pranking their friends, acting out the most outlandish situations. Pretending that you’ve been murdered, and having your mom walk in on your bloodied body isn’t funny. This gimmick has been worn thin, and no longer works.

  • Weird Eyebrow Things

We’ve all seen it. Weird eyebrow things. It might’ve been that one night when you stayed up late, mindlessly scrolling through Instagram. As you’re scrolling through your suggestions, something catches your eye. Something bright, flashy, and shiny. It’s an eyebrow- an eyebrow bedecked with glitter, rainbow colors, and (believe it or not) a necklace. Now that might be a bit of an exaggeration, but it’s not that far off from something you might come across these days.

Sadly, I have to say that we’ve gotten too carried away with our eyebrows. Shaving off brows, braiding them. I’ve seen wavy brows, feather brows, and foil brows. It’s even gone as far as to include eyebrows that resemble the McDonald’s arches.  Brows should be left to be brows. Period. They serve one purpose, and one purpose only: to keep sunlight out of your eyes. Now, I understand that we all get carried away sometimes, and like to be experimental in the ways that we do our makeup. But, it’s true what they say, less is more. When I tell you- I have seen it all. At this point, nothing would surprise me. Simply put, eyebrows have been taken to an entirely different level, and they need to come back down to Earth.
